Winter weather can dramatically impact your vehicle’s tire performance, especially on snow and icy roads. Maintaining the manufacturer’s recommended tire pressure is essential for safe driving, even in cold Florida winters or when visiting snowy areas.
Recently, a test on a Honda Passport Trail Sport demonstrated how different tire pressures affect acceleration and braking on packed snow. At the recommended pressure of 35 PSI, the vehicle showed stable handling but a longer braking distance. Lowering tire pressure by 10 PSI didn’t improve acceleration times and only slightly reduced stopping distance, which is not worth the risks.
Why avoid low tire pressure? Driving with underinflated tires can cause poor handling, increased wear, worse fuel economy, and potentially dangerous tire damage, including delamination. Overinflating tires by 10 PSI also showed no benefit and can decrease traction.
For Florida drivers seeking reliable vehicles designed to handle diverse conditions, understanding tire maintenance is key. Keeping tires inflated to the correct pressure ensures optimal grip, safety, and efficiency whether cruising Orlando streets or heading to colder climates.
