Mercedes-Benz is issuing a third recall for its EQB electric crossover due to fire risks linked to battery defects. Despite a previous software update intended to fix the issue, some vehicles continued to experience fire incidents, prompting a new recall to replace batteries in nearly 12,000 EQB models from 2022 to 2024.
The affected batteries, supplied by China’s Farasis Energy, may develop internal short circuits caused by production inconsistencies. This flaw increases the risk of a fire while the vehicle is parked or being driven. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration highlights that the batteries are less robust under normal stress factors.
Initially, Mercedes tried a software solution to reduce fire risk, but it failed in real-world conditions, leading to this latest and more comprehensive recall.
Owners of the EQB are urged to limit battery charging to 80 percent and to park outdoors and away from buildings until the battery replacement takes place. Notification letters are expected to be sent soon, with follow-ups when replacement batteries become available.
